Parkings in Galapagar

Galapagar is one of the main municipalities in the north-west of the Community of Madrid, located around 35 km from the capital and right at the gateway to the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its proximity to the A-6 motorway and towns such as Collado Villalba and San Lorenzo de El Escorial means that it receives a constant flow of visitors, both those who come to explore the old town and those who use the municipality as a starting point for hiking routes through the mountains. At iPark, we work to make parking easier in towns like this, providing clear information about the available options for parking comfortably and safely.

How to Park in Galapagar

The town centre has a regulated parking zone (blue and green zones), managed by the concession company EYSA. The usual hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00, and Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00; Sundays, public holidays and August afternoons are free. The green zone, primarily intended for residents, has lower rates for those living in the municipality. Payment can be made in cash, by card or through apps such as ElParking, EasyPark, Waylet or Mowiz.

If your visit is going to last several hours, for example, if you combine it with a route through the mountains or a leisurely meal, having access to a covered or supervised parking facility with no strict time limit is usually the most convenient alternative to the turnover of the regulated parking zone.

Galapagar: history, tradition and nature in the Madrid mountains

Galapagar was granted the title of town by Charles V in 1525, a milestone that is still remembered in the municipality through the Rollo or Picota, a historic symbol of that jurisdictional independence. The old town retains its Castilian mountain character, with the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption as an architectural and religious landmark, and Plaza de la Constitución as the social heart of the town.

The municipality also has a curious connection with royalty: the former Casa Veleta, where Infante Carlos Lorenzo was born, has given way to the La Bodeguilla bar, one of those places that connect present-day everyday life with local history. Another notable name associated with Galapagar is Camilo José Cela, Nobel Prize in Literature and a resident of the town, linked to El Torreón.

In terms of nature, Galapagar is a gateway to the Sierra de Guadarrama: Valmayor Reservoir, the second-largest reservoir in the province by water volume, Mount Abantos and the Regional Park of the Middle Course of the Guadarrama River offer hiking and cycling routes, as well as riverside natural areas, just a few minutes from the town centre. San Roque Park, within the municipality itself, is a quieter alternative for relaxing after your visit.

Gastronomy: a municipality recognised as a gastronomic destination

Galapagar is part of the Network of Gastronomic Towns of Spain, a culinary identity built around the mountains and Madrid’s local produce: wild mushrooms, PGI Sierra de Guadarrama beef, big and small game, and traditional spoon dishes such as venison or wild boar stew. Madrid-style cocido on Thursdays is a classic feature in many of its restaurants, while local pastries, including torrijas, rosquillas, roscón and puches, follow the liturgical calendar throughout the year, with establishments such as Pastelería Cueto and Mayca among the local references.

This tradition is celebrated throughout the year at events such as the Gastronomic Autumn (Tapas Fair), the October Roman Market, the Spoon Fair and the Oxtail Festival, which combine local produce with a lively street atmosphere.

Festivals and traditions of Galapagar

Galapagar’s festive calendar has three main highlights:

  • Patron saint festivities of the Santísimo Cristo de las Mercedes (mid-September), with novenas, a procession, open-air dances, a bullfighting fair, bull runs and activities for all ages.
  • Pilgrimage of the Virgen de los Desamparados (second Sunday of May), with pilgrims in traditional dress carrying the Virgin to the Ermita del Cerrillo, accompanied by dulzaina players.
  • Holy Week, with the Procession of Silence as the town’s oldest such event and a feature unique in the Community of Madrid: the participation of Peruvian and Ecuadorian brotherhoods alongside the town’s historic confraternities, a blend rarely seen in this kind of celebration.
